C\u2019est aussi une affaire de famille qui lui permet, enfant, de s\u2019exercer la main et le regard au contact d\u2019un double h\u00e9ritage, antagoniste, celui de l\u2019abstraction et du portrait r\u00e9aliste. Au vu de l\u2019impressionnant corpus de peintures r\u00e9alis\u00e9 depuis qu\u2019elle est artiste, il appara\u00eet \u00e9vident qu\u2019entre ces deux influences elle n\u2019a pas souhait\u00e9 prendre parti.<\/p>\n<p>Dans son \u0153uvre, les ruptures de style semblent se faire de mani\u00e8re programmatique. Des grisailles s\u00e9duisantes et virtuoses c\u00f4toient des monochromes fluo stridents ; des aplats, cern\u00e9s ou non de noir, font place \u00e0 des rendus hyperr\u00e9alistes, eux-m\u00eames pr\u00e9c\u00e9d\u00e9s d\u2019effets de flous qu\u2019elle d\u00e9signe par les n\u00e9ologismes Flounet ou Blurriness.<\/p>\n<p>Elle d\u00e9couvre sa famille artistique dans les ann\u00e9es 1980, lorsqu\u2019elle rejoint le groupe Les Fr\u00e8res Ripoulin, compos\u00e9 de Pierre Huyghe, Claude Closky, Jean Faucheur, Ox, Bla, Manhu, Trois carr\u00e9s, qui traduisent au moyen d\u2019une peinture d\u00e9cal\u00e9e, color\u00e9e et flashy, les mots d\u2019ordre qu\u2019ils se donnent. Lorsque la peinture semble devenue un medium obsol\u00e8te et r\u00e9gressif, N. Childress continue de peindre et d\u00e9clare, non sans ironie, vouloir \u00ab r\u00e9ussir \u00e0 inventer une peinture \u00e0 la fois conceptuelle et idiote \u00bb. Les th\u00e8mes d\u00e9complex\u00e9s qu\u2019elle aborde, l\u2019am\u00e8nent \u00e0 couvrir les cimaises d\u2019objets du quotidien, ordinaires et communs, agrandis, fa\u00e7on pop art, \u00e0 une \u00e9chelle monumentale : bo\u00eetes Tupperware, savons, peintures pour chiens et pigeons, bonbons, jouets, hair-pieces, qui excluent toute narration et repr\u00e9sentation humaine et permettent d\u2019encha\u00eener les tableaux en s\u00e9ries. En abordant des sujets plus complexes, N. Childress cr\u00e9e une peinture fond\u00e9e sur des antagonismes forts, m\u00ealant le beau\/le laid, l\u2019autoris\u00e9\/le dissident, le convenable\/le d\u00e9class\u00e9, l\u2019harmonieux et le dissonant.<\/p>\n<p>L\u2019importante exposition que le Mamco lui consacre n\u2019est pas une r\u00e9trospective. Le parcours se construit autour de th\u00e8mes chers \u00e0 l\u2019artiste, l\u2019op\u00e9ra et la litt\u00e9rature, qu\u2019elle traite sous forme d\u2019hommage \u00e0 deux grandes figures f\u00e9minines du XXe si\u00e8cle, aujourd\u2019hui disparues : la soprano australienne Marjorie Lawrence et la femme de lettres fran\u00e7aise Simone de Beauvoir. Chaque hommage, compos\u00e9 \u00e0 la fa\u00e7on d\u2019un tombeau po\u00e9tico-litt\u00e9raire ou musical \u2013 qui devient ici un genre pictural \u2013, portraiture ces femmes d\u2019exception qui ont, par leur engagement, leurs apparitions fortement m\u00e9diatis\u00e9es et leurs autobiographies respectives, entretenu leur image de femmes publiques. Le cycle in\u00e9dit consacr\u00e9 \u00e0 Marjorie Lawrence, bross\u00e9 \u00e0 grands traits, sur des rouleaux de papier kraft pass\u00e9s au blanc, reprend plusieurs images extraites du drame musical Interrupted Melody (1955) inspir\u00e9 du r\u00e9cit que la soprano \u00e9crivit, peu apr\u00e8s son \u00e9loignement temporaire de la sc\u00e8ne, \u00e0 la suite d\u2019une poliomy\u00e9lite. Ce papier peint, assimilable \u00e0 une peinture murale \u00e9voque les rideaux de sc\u00e8ne et les d\u00e9cors d\u2019op\u00e9ra. Y sont repr\u00e9sent\u00e9es Mme Butterfly, Carmen, Br\u00fcnhilde\u2026 et d\u2019autres arch\u00e9types f\u00e9minins, reflets sch\u00e9matis\u00e9s d\u2019une r\u00e9alit\u00e9 insaississable.<\/p>\n<p>Le \u00ab Tombeau de Simone de Beauvoir \u00bb rev\u00eat lui, l\u2019aspect d\u2019une installation o\u00f9 la peinture se d\u00e9cline sous diff\u00e9rentes formes. Celle d\u2019un papier peint cr\u00e9\u00e9 d\u2019apr\u00e8s l\u2019un des chemisiers de Simone de Beauvoir. Celle de tableaux aux tonalit\u00e9s vert olive emprunt\u00e9es \u00e0 la palette du peintre de la \u00ab r\u00e9alit\u00e9 d\u00e9labr\u00e9e \u00bb Francis Gruber (1912-1948), cit\u00e9 par N. Childress pour sa capacit\u00e9 \u00e0 traduire l\u2019\u00e9tat d\u2019esprit de la femme \u00ab vieillissante et d\u00e9sesp\u00e9r\u00e9e \u00bb que Simone de Beauvoir devenait, capable aussi de traduire son peu d\u2019estime, pour ne pas dire sa haine de la peinture. Des formes hybrides aussi, mi-peintes, mi-sculpt\u00e9es, telle la \u00ab barre noire \u00bb, \u00e9vocation de la mort pour l\u2019\u00e9crivain. Quelques Boyards aussi, ces \u00ab cigarettes pour cosaques \u00bb, fum\u00e9es en compagnie de Sartre et ordonn\u00e9es ici en b\u00fbcher. Sous forme enfin d\u2019un double liser\u00e9 de peinture noire et rouge, tel qu\u2019il figure sur les couvertures des publications de la NRF, qui marqu\u00e8rent le passage d\u2019une \u00ab jeune fille rang\u00e9e \u00bb \u00e0 Simone de Beauvoir.
